The floppy disk is dead.

April 27th, 2010 4:36 PM

While reading the news today it came to my attention that  Sony has announced it will stop making the floppy disk.

A chapter in computer history has ended, and I am sure that many of you have both good, and bad memories of these devices. For myself, I can remember sitting in my dad’s office, and using his floppy disks as make shift building blocks, while the older kids got to play Kings Quest and Zelda.

Looking back on the floppy disk’s life, I can’t help but look at how much technology, and the way we do things changes.  A process or medium that is cutting edge one day, can become a child’s toy the next.

My question is, what are other “floppy disks” that are in our world? Do we too quickly get rid of the old in exchange for the shiny new and hip, or are we holding onto concepts a little too tightly for our own good?

Yeah I remember the 3.5 disks, I used to play the classics of oregon trail and some muppets video game that I had gotten for a gift.

And think about TVs what’s the deal with that why are they always getting bigger. I like my TV to be 9 inches in black and white.

I think Erik brought up a great point. Disk sizes have evolved similar to televisions while other technologies have simply developed and completely thrown a loop in front of many of the older baby boomers as a majority believed they would just let others take care of them once they retire. Instead the Boomers way of established life is being forcefully stripped from them and given to the talent your who are leading to cooperation globally and between other programming languages and communities instead of trying to hold onto and extort the information each of the talented and skilled people have done.
